Product Information

Vegvisir or runic compass is a very interesting and well-known symbol that is engraved on the handmade pottery mug. This mug with the same name “Vegvisir” is a part of the “Vikings” collection. The symbol is very interesting, but as with many ancient symbols, there is no single interpretation of this sign. From our side, we will point out the basic points and hope that this will provide more clarity on this mysterious and powerful symbol.

What does the Vegvisir meaning or symbol stand for?

The symbol on the cup consists of a circle and four (4) lines intersecting in the center with equal spaces between the lines. The lines have eight (8) unique limbs where each of the limbs identifies one of the 8 worlds described in the Nordic legends and manuscripts. The World Tree Yggdrasil which represents in a particular sense Universe unites all those worlds, which include Asgard, Alphaheim, Vanaheim, Niflheim, Svartalfaheim, Hel, Utgard, Muspelheim. In the center, at the point of intersection of all 4 lines, is the ninth (9) world that is called Midgard. The middle world or Midgard is the world of people, which has a connection with all worlds, or to which all paths from other worlds lead. Along the circumference around the sign stretch 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, symbolizing all types of matters and energies presented in the Universe. As for the runes of the Elder Futhark, their presence on the symbol is disputed, but the alternate name of this symbol known as Runic Compass comes from this.

Another widespread interpretation, which is not denying the first, is that this symbol was used by the Vikings and other Northern peoples in their travels as it always helped them find the way home – to Midgard.

The origin of the symbol is northern.

    Handmade technology

For Artglina it's very important to follow the ancient handmade eco friendly production technology that leads all the products to exceptional eye-catching design and quality resulted in lifelong product use. The technology that we strictly follow for all our products leads us to natural products as close as possible to original ancient pottery and can be represented by the following (5) five major steps:

    Step Description
#1 Products are created and dried within 2 weeks.
#2 Firing at 960°C (1760°F) degrees for 12 hours and as a result, row clay turns into a ceramic.
#3 Glaze firing 920°C (1688°F) - 980°C (1796°F) that take from several hours to an entire day.
#4 Milk firing at a temperature of 300°C (572°F). The natural milk moisture evaporates and the milky fat clogs the ceramic pores. This step takes one more day.
#5 Gnosis coating (a mixture of linseed oil + beeswax) fixes the milky layer and adds contrast to the product. This is considered the final major step that requires one more day.

The creation of each product is a complex process the contains a number of steps and requires between 3 - 5 weeks before the product gets finished and can be sent to the customer. All the ingredients and materials that we use for the creation of products are natural and eco friendly.
